Service learning is a multi-disciplinary, experiential learning effort that allows students to engage academically through community service.

Mission

51¸£ÀûÉç's Office of Service Learning and Responsible Citizenship exists to develop opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to participate in critically engaged community learning through reciprocal and equitable partnerships with campus, local, and global community partners. These experiential learning efforts strive to create an intentional learning environment that leverages and develops student skills and enriches community agency assets.

  • 51¸£ÀûÉç embraces community service as an extension of service-learning and believes this service is a philosophy of experiential learning in which students participate not only to meet the needs of the community, but to develop critical thinking skills, commitment to values and skill for responsible citizenship.

Students who acquire up to 400 hours of qualified community service will receive a designation on their Comprehensive Learning Record to recognize their achievement. In addition, they will receive special recognition in commencement publications and receive a service cord they can wear at graduation.

Recognition will go as follows:

  • 100 hours: Responsible Citizenship Award
  • 250 Hours: Community Builder Award
  • 400 Hours: Global Advocate Award

To satisfy this requirement, students may receive credit by:

  • Applying for the Community Service Transcript Designate Program
  • Record service volunteer hours on the Mane Connection student engagement platform that meet 51¸£ÀûÉç guidelines
  • Complete critical thinking reflection(s)

Graduating Seniors must have achieved 100, 250, and/or 400 hours documented, approved hours by March 1 of each year to allow time for verification and inclusion in commencement publications (July 1 for August conferral, November 1 for December conferral). All placements will be reviewed for verification. Students will be contacted for any clarification and notification
